Fresh off of a four match winning streak which saw Duluth score fifteen goals while conceding
just three, the BlueGreens will return home on Wednesday to host current conference table
leaders Minneapolis City in a rematch of this season’s earlier 3-2 loss.
City have held a perfect record this season and are clear favorites to win the north conference,
but will have to face a Duluth side that has drastically improved since their early match up and
has found a deadly run of form in the final third, particularly through the ever-scoring Sidney
Warden, now on twelve goals in his debut season. The likes of James Westfield, Eric Watson,
and Gabriel Campora have also found their scoring boots for Duluth, adding several goals across
the last few matches against the likes of Med City, Joy Athletic, and the Dakota Fusion.
The star performances haven’t just come from the forwards, however, with three season Duluth
FC veteran Aidan Hill earning Man of the Match in last week’s 5-1 win over Joy Athletic both
for his excellent goal and great all around performance in the midfield. Hill has been joined by a
list of new and returning players in the midfield, backline, and goal who have stepped up.
A win would prove massive for Duluth’s title challenge. City currently sit nine points ahead of
Duluth, but Duluth has a game in hand. This means that if Duluth wins against City and then
wins that additional match, in this case their next game on the 7th against La Crosse Aris, they
would be just three points off of the leading Crows with handful of matches left to play.
Continued success on the pitch will also be crucial to Duluth’s playoff qualification if City were
to maintain their place at the top of the table, with Med City still very much in the fight for a spot
in the top two.
It’s sure to be a big match between the only two clubs to have won the north conference, two
clubs that also have a history of eventful matches against one another. Kick off is expected at 7
pm.
